How it works
A hedge is a bet on the opposite outcome of a bet you already hold. Two common targets:
Equal profit: H = S × d1 ÷ d2 (both outcomes return the same)
Break even: H = S ÷ (d2 − 1) (if the original loses, the hedge returns your stake)
S is the original stake at decimal d1, and d2 is the hedge price. The result shows what you make if either side wins. Hedging gives up expected value for certainty: if the hedge price carries vig, the locked amount is less than the original bet was worth on average.
Worked example
You hold $100 on a +400 futures bet. The other side is now −150.
| Hedge | Hedge stake | If original wins | If hedge wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equal profit | $300.00 | $100.00 | $100.00 |
| Break even | $150.00 | $250.00 | $0.00 |
Equal profit: H = $100 × 5.0000 ÷ 1.6667 = $300.00
Break even: H = $100 ÷ 0.6667 = $150.00
Things to watch
- Hedging costs EV. You pay the vig on the hedge; only hedge when you value certainty over the average.
- Shop the hedge price. The best price on the other side, across books, decides how much you lock.
